Sound Friends Deaf Children’s Society (DCS) is a local charity set up in 2011 to support families of d/Deaf* children. Many d/Deaf children (statistics suggest slightly more than 90%) are born to hearing parents and so it is a common occurrence that these parents need support and advice on how to deal with this diagnosis, communicate with their child and make plans for their social and academic lives.
Sound Friends DCS is affiliated with the National Charity (NDCS – National Deaf Children’s Society) and is a registered charity within Northern Ireland – NIC100725.
We currently cover the following towns and surrounding areas:
Portadown
Lurgan
Craigavon
Banbridge
Newry
Kilkeel
Many of our children use hearing technology, whilst using a mixture of speech and sign language to communicate. All communication methods are accepted and supported within Sound Friends.
*d/Deaf – this represents the acknowledgement of the Deaf community to use “D” in comparison to someone who perceives themselves to be in the hearing community “d” but has a deafness diagnosis. We use the word d/Deaf to encompass all types of deafness including temporary, fluctuating, unilateral and diagnoses within the thresholds from mild to profound.
